Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
