TikTok Grants Users Control to Decrease AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that enables them to lessen the quantity of AI-created media appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it now features more than 1 bn content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This development aligns with a surge in content created by AI, driven by new AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that approximately a tenth of the quickest rising video streams on a popular video site only show clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a label for substandard, factory-style content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we aim to give people the ability to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its app identified as artificially created. In total, over 100 m media items are added to the platform each day, making clips made by AI a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of limit or boost the volume of artificial media they watch by accessing the topic control feature in the application and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that currently be adjusted under the setting include politics, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s guidelines require users to tag convincing artificially created content, and it bans harmful fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its community policies.

In addition, the app will from now on apply an artificially created tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing artificial media. This action is aimed to help prevent users from trying to evade the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also introducing a $2m educational fund for specialists and institutions to create learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit charitable organizations specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, amid debate over proposals to make redundant hundreds of safety staff in the UK. The company is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation division in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content before it has to be seen by humans. The platform announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is why a extensive automated help is proving valuable process content quickly.”
