At least 35,000 applicants might be affected, warns the United States embassy

A substantial data breach in Somalia's digital visa application system potentially disclosed private data belonging to tens of thousands of individuals, comprising American nationals, the US embassy in Mogadishu has warned.

Officials stated obtained reliable information that "unidentified hackers" breached the Mogadishu administration's digital visa application portal, possibly exposing information belonging to approximately 35,000 individuals.

The leaked documents circulating online comprise names, photographs, birth dates, relationship status, home addresses and email information, according to a United States official announcement published on recently.

"This security incident continues to occur and might reveal any sensitive details you enter into the application portal," British authorities has similarly alerted travellers.

"Evaluate the dangers when considering application for an e-visa mandatory for visiting the Federal Republic."

Administrative Action

Government officials have remained silent about the security compromise. However administration officials has transferred visa processing away from the initial application portal to the new system etas.gov.so, without issuing a public clarification.

"Even though American diplomatic mission in Somalia cannot verify whether applicant details is part of the breach, travelers who have requested visas through the electronic visa system might be compromised," the US' statement said.

Territorial Consequences

The updated visa process mandates each person traveling, including those from the self-declared republic of Somaliland and the semi-autonomous region of the northeastern region, to seek travel visas through digital means.

Opponents claim travellers have faced supplementary costs in specific areas, amounting to double charges.

Regional Dynamics

The northern territory, that announced sovereignty in three decades ago, manages its territory via separate governmental bodies but has not been internationally recognised. Mogadishu authorities maintains that this territory still constitutes its jurisdictional area.

The claimed security incident contributes to long-running tensions between Somali federal authorities and Hargeisa regarding authority over Somali airspace. While Mogadishu regained total jurisdiction of its airspace in 2017, Somaliland continues to contest the current system.

Recent Escalation

The disagreement intensified this week after Somaliland's President Abdirahman Irro said Somaliland would not accept Mogadishu's electronic visa and instructed that aviation companies need to acquire authorization from Somaliland officials before entering its airspace.

Nevertheless major airlines have declined to board passengers absent Somalia's e-visa approval.

In the latest development, Hargeisa's international relations official Abdirahman Dahir Aadan reiterated that "all visitors to Somaliland will obtain travel authorization on arrival", stating Somalia's e-visa system was not safe and alerting that "people's data can fall into the hands of extremist groups" as a result of employing the platform.

Travel Disruptions

The conflict has left some travellers heading to Somaliland unable to board flights due to rejection at check-in due to absence of Mogadishu's digital permit.

The northern region's aviation official, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has informed media outlets that the regulations - originally publicized in recent months - became operational on 10 November.

He said airlines that do not comply would be instructed to change course, and asserted multiple planes were previously redirected.

Airspace Control Conflict

Footage released by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority appears to show territorial flight directors issuing instructions to global airline crews - an action applauded locally as a confirmation of northern self-governance.

But the federal aviation regulator maintains it possesses sole administrative and legal control over the federal aviation control area (aviation control zone), that includes the entire country's aviation space. Authorities have instructed each flight to disregard all directives issued by sources besides Mogadishu.

It warned that not adhering to national and worldwide air transport standards could pose security threats and cause "significant legal repercussions".
