Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
